What "needs review" means

Intune reported a device whose serial another device here already has.

2 min read

Serial numbers are unique within an organisation, so when Intune reports a device whose serial number already belongs to another device in AssetSort, the sync doesn't guess which record is right — it leaves that Intune record unwritten and asks you to review it. The Integrations card says "N devices need review", the sync summary says "needs review (duplicate serial)", and the existing device raises a Duplicate serial from Intune alert and shows both candidates on its page: the Intune record (name, model, last check-in, who it's enrolled to) and the device you already have (when it was added and who has it). The usual causes are an old enrolment Intune hasn't cleaned up after a re-enrolment, or a mistyped serial on a hand-entered device.

  1. 01

    Adopt the Intune record

The device you already have takes over the Intune record: it keeps its people, licences, tags, folder, documents and custom fields, and from the next sync its name, model, OS, compliance and check-ins come from Intune. A retired or spare device comes back into service. This is the answer when they are the same physical device.

  2. 02

    Keep separate

AssetSort will not track that Intune record until one of the serials changes — fix the serial in Intune, or on the device here, to track both. A pair you kept separate never asks again unless one of the serials changes.

  3. 03

    Or fix the serial

If the device here simply has the wrong serial, edit it: the alert clears straight away, and the next sync brings the Intune record in as its own device. The same happens if the record disappears from Intune, or if the device here is deleted. Read-only members see the review but can't decide it — an admin or a technician does.
